Stress: The Cause of Your Acne?

Published:August 25th, 2011

Stress has a great role in the flare-up of many skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis and rosacea, according to a report discussed at the American Academy of Dermatology’s Summer Academy Meeting 2011 held in New York City.

Previously, many experts believe that chronic skin conditions are the causes of unpredictable skin flares, resulting in stress and depression. However, just recently, they are beginning to believe that stress may also have a role in the flare-ups of these conditions resulting in a vicious cycle.

According to Dr. Richard Fried, a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and the reporter of this new theory, stress can affect the functions of the skin barrier, making it more sensitive, more reactive, and more permeable. As a result, bacteria, allergens, and irritants can easily penetrate the skin, leading to the manifestation of skin problems. In fact, stress can make acne lesions worse and more inflamed.

To help patients cope up with stress-related skin conditions, stress management is necessary. Behavioral therapy, meditation, psychotherapy, yoga, hypnosis, and even antidepressants may be suggested in patients with skin flare-ups to manage their skin condition.

In case of acne exacerbation, visiting your dermatologist and minimizing your stress are the most effective ways to improve your skin condition. It is true. Minimizing your stress goes a long way when it comes to improving your health.
